They had already lost one to a stray dog, another to the cold capricious weather
She smashes the sawgrass, hefting her weight into Patterson Island
As her children (safe) sound fear trumpets from the bullrushes
‘Faster, Momma. Faster…’
Her youngling bleats in panic staccato as She bears down – smashing through the snares
Tearing her wings, her breast as only a Mother can
In endless declaration of love

spider lattice worsted
rust tangled and torn
you are a rusted metal
padlock
bramble-bruised and
bent
twisted barrier fence
you are line after line
of steadfast stumbleworm
honeycomb
torn and trampled keeper
defining webbed
circle
gatekeeper of my heart

And the cycle continues on with our protagonist as she wrestles with her conscience. What is she to do about what she believes to be a dead woman that only she knows about?
