Black Dog Blues

The island’s got them everywhere

Strays picking at the side of the road

All makes.

All mutts.

Forever.

Endless.

They’re part of the scenery.

Except for the beast I witnessed today.

Skeleton thin, cracked hips and snapple ribs mostly.

Racing like he did before.

The dog track isn’t far from here

The old ones, losers and the lame get dumped all the time.

This bag o’ bones still had a tear left.

Hauling towards incoming traffix

Middle of the lane.

Not the edge, cowering with the others.

Head down, running full out.

A black bullet aimed.

I turned the corner and didn’t see

The ending.

But I heard it.

It’s how I’ll go as well.

When the time comes.

Balls out and straight on.

Hard.

Facing down the inevitable.
